Dan Ackerson Stepping Down From GM; Wife Has Advanced Cancer
DETROIT, MI – GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson will retire as chairman and CEO on Jan. 15, 2014. Dan Ackerson is stepping down from General Motors because his wife has been diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer. Mary Barra, 51, will succeed him as CEO.
Mary Barra breaks that glass ceiling at GM to become the first female CEO of any big three auto maker.
Dan Akerson joined the company as a board member in 2009 and then became chairman and CEO as of September 2010. Akerson succeeded Edward Whitacre as CEO. Ackerson was the man in charge of steering GM from bankruptcy to profitability for the past 15 months straight.
The General Motors family of employees and the residents of Michigan wish Mr. Ackerson and his family the best in the weeks and months to come as they fight his wife’s cancer.
