Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary Expansion & Celebration


ALPENA, MI – The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, after 8 years of NOAAmeetings and discussions, will be finally receiving congressional approval to expand.

The congressional designation for the expansion is expected to occur on Friday, September 5th, 2014.

The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary currently covers 448 sq miles.  It will expand to 4,300 sq miles with this expansion.

In honor of the expansion, the Sanctuary is planning a celebration on September 6th, 2014 at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center.

Throughout the day of the celebration there will be various activities.  There will also be free glass-bottom boat tours on the ‘Lady Michigan‘.

The main event starts at 6:30 p.m. with live music, hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and much more.

Dr. Bob Ballard, who is among the most famous underwater researchers in the world, will also be in attendance.  He is expected to give a small presentation that evening.

Tickets are available for $50 and can be purchased at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center located at 500 W. Fletcher Street in Alpena, MI.
