Drivers Identified in Deadly Muskegon County Crash


TWIN LAKE, MI – A 44-year-old man is dead following a fatal crash that happened on M-120 (Holton Road) at 5th Street Saturday, December 20th, 2014.Fatal Crash

A light rain that had fallen quickly froze when the temperatures dropped and that made the roadways very slick in the area.




The accident occurred late Saturday afternoon at about 4:50pm.

Chad Calkins, 44-years-old, of Muskegon, was the driver of an older model Ford Crown Victoria that was headed northbound and another driver of a Volvo station wagon, Jon Vanpaemel, 72-years-old, of Twin Lake,  that was traveling southbound on Holton Road collided due to the icy road conditions.

Calkins lost control due to the icy pavement causing the crash.  Both vehicles caught on fire following the accident.

Chad Calkins was killed in the collision and fire.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  The other driver, Jon Vanpaemel, did survive and was transported to the hospital.  He had been listed in critical condition but is now listed in stable condition.

A Muskegon County Sheriff’s Deputy who was responding to another vehicular incident in the area heard the crash happen and saw both cars go up in flames, but could not get Calkins out of his vehicle in time.

Other drivers who were in the area at the time of the accident report that there was black ice in many spots.

The crash remains under investigation.
