MDOT statement on Detroit People Mover derailment

LANSING, MI – The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) commends the Detroit People Mover (DPM) in its efforts to safely evacuate passengers from a derailed train last night.Detroit People Mover

“It was very fortunate there were no injuries to any of the passengers riding the train,” State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle said. “Everyone was able to safely exit from the derailed car safely at a station platform.”

MDOT provides federally mandated state oversight over the 3-mile elevated, automated railway, which loops around Detroit’s central business district. Throughout its 28 years of operation, the system has had a good safety record by complying with all Federal Transit Administration (FTA) safety and security requirements. These requirements are mandated by federal regulations (49 CFR, Part 659) for fixed-rail guideway systems. The DPM has worked hard to comply with all required protocols through their safety reviews.
