Grand Rapids Woman Killed while Riding Bicycle


PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI – A Grand Rapids woman who was on a late night bike ride was hit by an SUV and killed on Tuesday evening.Fatal Crash-1

On Tuesday, February 24th, 2015, at 11:22pm, the Kent County Sheriff’s Department responded to the report of a bicyclist being struck by a vehicle on Plainfield Ave. near Rockhill Dr.




Responding deputies located Anita Daugavietis, 58-years-old, of Grand Rapids lying on the road severely injured.

It was determined that Anita Daugavietis had been riding her bicycle, which did not have any lights on it, southbound on Plainfield Ave in the curb lane of traffic.

Amy Vanderwal, 23-years-old, of Grand Rapids, who was also traveling south on Plainfield Ave, did not see Anita in the traffic lane and struck her from behind.

Anita was transported to Spectrum Downtown where she died as a result of her injuries.

The driver of the vehicle had not been drinking and speed is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
