Leelanau County Woman arrested for Child Endangerment and OWI
EMPIRE TOWNSHIP, MI – The Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office arrested a female suspect after a traffic stop in Empire Township.
On Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017, at 3:00 p.m., a Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the area of M-22 and Welch Road observed a 2002 Saturn traveling southbound weaving all over the roadway.
The deputy observed the Saturn to weave off the paved portion of the roadway kicking up gravel and then weave back and forth over the fog line. A traffic stop was made and the driver identified as a 32 year old woman from Traverse City. She also had her two children in the vehicle, a 7 year old son and a 13 year old son.
The deputy detected an odor of alcohol when speaking to the driver. The driver also made statements that she had a rough night having an argument with her mother and she was now attempting to take her children to the beach.
After an investigation the deputy arrested the driver for operating a motor vehicle intoxicated. She was lodged in the Leelanau County Jail where her blood alcohol was determined to be over three times the legal limit to be on the roadway. She was lodged on two counts of child endangerment as well. The driver has one previous conviction for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs.
The two children were turned over to a friend who responded to the scene of the traffic stop.
