68 yr old Ohio Woman Killed in Crash on US-23 in Monroe County
SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI – Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone is reporting a fatal traffic crash that occurred at approximately 12:11 PM on Monday, April 17, 2017. The crash occurred on Southbound US 23 approximately 1.5 miles south of Ida West Road, in Summerfield Township.
The investigation revealed that Jeffrey Bowling, 54-years-old, of Gibsonburg, Ohio was operating a semi – tractor / trailer southbound US23 in the right travel lane, when it rear ended a trailer that was being pulled by a Ford F350 pickup truck. The Ford pickup truck had been stopped on the roadway due to construction ahead. Upon impact, the Ford F350 struck a Lexus passenger car that was stopped ahead of it.
The Lexus passenger car was being operated by Janet Rheinecker, 68-years-old, of Sylvania, Ohio. Upon impact the Lexus passenger car was forced into two additional semi – tractor / trailers, which had also been stopped due to the construction zone ahead.
Mrs. Rheinecker was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash.
None of the other individuals involved in the crash were injured.
Alcohol is not a factor in the crash.
Southbound US23 traffic was closed for several hours due to the clean up effort.
Assisting at the scene was the Summerfield and Whiteford Township Fire Department’s along with Monroe Community Ambulance. Additionally the Michigan State Police and Motor Carrier Division of the Monroe Post also assisted at the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by Deputies Skyler Riffle and Jeff Corie of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Uniformed Services Division along with Deputy Brian Quinn of the Traffic Services Division. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call 734-240-7493.
