Mistaken Identity may have lead to Two Detroit Police Officers being Shot
DETROIT, MI – Just shortly before midnight on Easter Sunday, April 16th, 2017 a call went out across the police scanner that an officer was down at 20511 Lesure Street in Detroit.
Two officers had responded to 9-1-1 calls from the home where it had been reported that someone kept trying to break into the house several times over the weekend. When the officers got to the home, a 19-year-old, who is said to have possibly been trying to protect his home and his family, fired a shotgun because he was unaware that it was the police who were at the door.
When he fired the shotgun blast through the door, that blast hit one officer in the face and the other was struck with shrapnel in his left arm.
The response from officers across the city was swift. The injured officer’s were conveyed to Sinai-Grace Hospital by fellow officers. Responding officers to the scene were able to get the mother, the 19-year-old and a 14-year-old out of the house without further incident within an hour of the two officers being shot.
The officer who was shot in the face is listed in critical condition. The other officer has been treated and released from the hospital.
