Kalkaska County Man arrested for Attempted Murder among other Charges


KALKASKA, MI – During the evening hours of July 12, 2017 Troopers from the Michigan State Police Houghton Lake Post responded to a residence in Orange Township, Kalkaska County to the report of a felonious assault in progress.

The juvenile caller told dispatchers that a man had pointed a gun at his father. As troopers were nearing the scene, they came in contact with victims who fled the scene and were waiting at an intersection for police. Troopers learned that the male suspect fled the scene in a vehicle.




As troopers began to speak with victims, they pointed out to troopers a vehicle that was heading toward their direction and told troopers that it was the suspect. The suspect vehicle passed by the troopers and victims and troopers were able to make a traffic stop on the vehicle. The 31-year-old male suspect exited the vehicle, was not compliant with trooper’s verbal commands, resisted arrest and was subsequently taken into custody.

Further investigation by troopers, detectives and canine units from the Michigan State Police Houghton Lake Post, Cadillac Post and Seventh District Headquarters revealed that the suspect had gone over to the residence of his estranged wife and they began to argue.

The 29-year-old female victim contacted a 33-year-old male friend of hers and asked him to come over and she had also contacted her father and asked him to come over. The suspect attempted to physically harm his estranged wife’s dogs and this led to a physical altercation between the two, outside the home. As this physical altercation was occurring, the female victim’s male friend and the male friend’s 12 year old son arrived on scene. The suspect then produced a handgun from his person and attempted to assault the female victim with the gun, but she was able to successfully knock it out of his hands.

The female’s male friend attempted to assist, but the male suspect retrieved the handgun, pointed it at the male friend and pulled the trigger, but the gun did not go off. The suspect then began to physically attack the female’s male friend. The male victim’s son fled into the woods and called 911. The female’s father arrived on scene and the female, her male friend, his son and her father were able to flee the scene. None of the parties involved suffered any serious physical injuries during this incident.

The 31-year-old suspect, a Kalkaska County man has been arrested and charged with numerous crimes including, but not limited to, attempted murder, aggravated stalking, resisting and obstructing police and operating while intoxicated. He is currently lodged in the Kalkaska County jail awaiting arraignment in the 87th District Court.
