DETROIT, MI – The wind storm that hit Michigan two weeks ago did major damage to the steeple at St. Josaphat Roman Catholic Church in Detroit. The church is 112 years old. It is iconic to the Detroit skyline. The steeple is visible from I-75 on Detroit’s east side.
Church officials are waiting on two cost estimates by contractors:
- Rebuild the steeple. Costs for that will be between $750,000 and $1 Million. The parish does not have the means to handle those costs.
- Remove it and cap the bell tower
The Archdiocese of Detroit has said that St. Josaphat could receive some insurance assistance but it is not known at this time how much.
St. Josaphat’s Roman Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic church located at 715 East Canfield Street. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1985.
