DETROIT, MI – Kevin Washington, 36, had been arrested and jailed yesterday on outstanding warrants but his troubles just became bigger today. He was originally jailed for home invasion and an outstanding traffic infraction.
He has now been charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and failure to properly supervise children. He has also been charged with two counts of second-degree child abuse. The involuntary manslaughter charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and the second-degree child abuse carries a penalty of four years.
Washington was arraigned on the charges Tuesday by Magistrate Renee McDuffy. His bond was set at $100,000 cash surety.
The little boys have been identified as Damian Washington, 4, and Mehkai Williams, 1 by The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office.
The fire on Prairie Street broke out about 1 pm last Friday afternoon. Kevin Washington made statements to the media that he had only been away from the house for no more than 10 minutes while he was across the street at a neighbors house. That neighbor refuted that statement saying he was across the street for at least 30 or more minutes.
