TOLEDO, OH – On Sunday, January 26th, 2014, two firefighters, Stephen Machcinski, 42, and James Dickman, 31, were killed while battling a blaze in a, 137 year old, six-unit apartment building. The structure is located at 528 Magnolia St., Toledo, OH. The firefighters were fighting the blaze when they became disoriented. Fellow firefighters made “valiant efforts” to remove them and begin life-saving measures but were unsuccessful.
Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins asked that flags be flown at half-staff throughout the city on Monday. Firefighters throughout Toledo and around the nation are now mourning the loss of those two lives.
Five adults from four apartment units and an adult and two children from a house next door were placed in shelters overnight by the Red Cross of Northwest Ohio.
