DETROIT, MI – Former Red Wings defenceman Nick Lidstrom’s #5 jersey will be lifted to the rafters tonight at Joe Louis Arena officially retiring that number from ever being worn again.
Lidstrom played 20 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings. Over the course of his career, Lidstrom became the first European-born and trained NHL captain to win the Stanley Cup. He captained for the final six seasons of his career.
Expected to attend are Mike Babcock, Ken Holland, Christopher Ilitch, Chris Chelios, Brendan Shanahan, Igor Larionov, Vladimir Konstantinov, Kris Draper, Scotty Bowman and others.
Following the ceremony to retire Lidstrom’s jersey, the Wings take on the Colorado Avalanche. Doors open at 5:30. The game is sold out.
