DETROIT, MI – A 16 year old is dead this morning and his two friends were being treated at St. John Hospital after they carjacked a man on Detroit’s east side.
Around 2a.m. this morning the trio carjacked a man at a gas station near Van Dyke and Outer Drive on Detroit’s east side. They fled the scene in the victims 1994 Dodge Duster down 7 Mile Road with the victim still in the car. Police say the carjackers let the driver out of the car at a fast food restaurant a few blocks away at 7 Mile and Gratiot.
Police were able to catch up to them and initiated a pursuit. The driver lost control of the car at a speed of about 70 miles per hour. The Dodge Duster hit a light pole and then a tree at 7 Mile Road and Strasburg. After impacting the pole, the car rolled over ejecting the driver.
The jaws of life were needed to extract the other two from the car. The driver was dead on scene. The incident remains under investigation. Charges are expected to the brought against the two survivors.
This was the 2nd major high profile crime in a matter of hours that involved teens and someone has died.
