The Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting death of 29-year-old Roger Howard from Traverse City, MI. Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a home Friday evening around 11:30PM on a report of a shooting. 27-year-old Nicole Mitchell had called 911 dispatch and told the dispatcher that there had been an accidental shooting at her home.
Upon entering the residence, EMT’s found Roger Howard with a single gun shot wound to the chest. He was transported to Munson Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Nicole Mitchell claims she was in fear of her life and her children’s safety after she had told Howard to leave and that he was not welcome. Howard had called Mitchell Friday evening and asked to visit Mitchell at her house. Mitchell picked up Howard at his Garfield Township apartment and drove him to her house. Mitchell says once they arrived at her house, they got into an argument in the garage. Mitchell says she told Howard he was not welcome and told him several times to leave. Mitchell then went inside her house.
Mitchell said she went to the gun safe in the bedroom she was in and removed a semi-automatic pistol. Howard had entered the house and told Mitchell he “would rather die than leave.” Mitchell said Howard walked toward her and grabbed the pistol. Mitchell then heard the gun discharge.
No arrests have been made at this time. Autopsy results are pending. It has not been determined if charges will be filed in this case.
