3 Week Old Baby Dies from Possible Abuse


PRESQUE ISLE COUNTY, MI – Sadly the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Department police raidis investigating the death of a 3 week old baby boy this morning.  His name is Ashton Robert Richardson of Hawks.

An infant from Presque Isle County died at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw after he was transported there from Alpena Regional Medical Center on Thursday evening.

Officers were called to a home in Bismarck Township shortly after 8 p.m. on a report that the three-week-old infant had stopped breathing. The infant was transported to Alpena Regional Medical Center with head and internal injuries. The child’s injuries were determined to have been caused by a non-accidental event. The baby’s mother, Kirsten Marie Richardson, and her boyfriend were the only people with the 3 week old boy at the time of the incident.

The Presque Isle County Sheriffs Department, Child and Family Services , Michigan State Police, and authorities from Saginaw County are all investigating the baby’s death.

An autopsy was performed Sunday to determine the actual cause of death.  The details of that report have not been released.  This is the second report of possible child abuse in the area within the past week.

Ashton Robert Richardson’s Obituary reads as follows:

      Ashton Robert Richardson, age 3 weeks, of Hawks, passed away April 5, 2014 at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw. He was born March 12, 2014 in Petoskey. Ashton is survived by: his mom: Kirsten Marie Richardson; grandparents: Jenny and Michael Freel, and William Richardson, Jr.; great grandparents: Sandra Richardson, Janet Thyrion, and Connie Sutter; many aunts, uncles and cousins.  Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home on Saturday, April 12, 2014 from noon to the time of the funeral at 2:00pm with Mr. Carl Altman officiating.
