ALPENA, MI – Staples Corporation announced in March that it would be closing 225 of it’s stores to save $500 million dollars a year. The Alpena Staples on M-32 West hit the chopping block and will close on July 19th, 2014.
The closing of Staples will put a dent in the growing business community on M-32 West until a new retailer can be found to fill that space. Meijers is getting ready to break ground across the street very soon so it probably will not be long before something new takes up residence in the building where Staples is at.
On March 6, Staples’ corporate headquarters announced plans to close approximately 225 stores in North America by the end of 2015, as part of an effort to save half a billion dollars a year. Staple’s corporation has stated that almost half the company’s sales are now generated online
Staples opened 15 years ago in Alpena. It is unfortunate to see this store close. 18 employee’s were notified last Friday that they would be losing their jobs. All questions about the closing of the store have been referred to Staples corporate headquarters in Framingham, Mass.
