WEST BRANCH, MI – 84 year old Calvert H. Shuptrine of Toledo, Ohio was at his residence on Melda Drive, in Iosco County when he went out for a swim. Shuptrine started struggling in the water and then became unconscious.
Construction workers assisted in trying to save Shuptrine by going in the waters after him. State Police in West Branch were dispatched at about 1:20 Monday afternoon.
EMS was called to the scene but were unable to revive the victim.
At this time the waters are still very cold and it is early in the season for swimming in the lakes. Everyone should take precautions to avoid such tragedies. Search and recovery is still taking place for another drowning victim at Stony Creek Metropark.
21 year old Army reservist Malcolm Robert Fairley is still missing after he went under in the waters at Stony Creek Metropark but never resurfaced.
