Livonia Soccer Referee Dies

LIVONIA, MI – John Bieniewicz, 44 years old, who was refereeing an adult game John Bieniewiczof soccer on Sunday June 29th, 2014 and was punched by 36 year old Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad has died.  Bieniewicz passed away at 10:30 this morning. John Bieniewicz was a resident of Westland.

On Monday Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad was arraigned on a felony charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.  His bond at that time was set at $500,000 cash/surety bond.  Given that Bieniewicz has died the charges will likely be elevated to murder and another bond hearing will take place.

The soccer game was being played in Mies Park in Livonia Sunday afternoon.  Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad was being ejected from the game by Bieniewicz after receiving a second violation in the game.  Saad ‘sucker punched’ him.  Saad fled the field after punching John Bieniewicz. Some of the players in the soccer game got the license plate number and a description of the vehicle he left in.

Bieniewicz was a licensed soccer referee.  Saad’s soccer team has been kicked out of the league.

John Bieniewicz had been declared brain dead and was kept on life support until his organs could be harvested for transplant in others.

A fund is being established to help with funeral costs for John Bieniewicz.  If you would like to donate, please go to John Bieniewicz Memorial.

Bassel  Abdul-Amir Saad is due back in court on July 10th, 2014.
