Amended Charges in Death of Soccer Referee


LIVONIA, MI – Charges are being amended in the death of John Bieniewicz who Bassel Abdul-Amir Saadwas a soccer referee that was hit in the head by Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad during a game on Sunday June 29th, 2014.  John Bieniewicz, 44 years old, was punched by 36 year old Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad died from the injuries sustained by Saad.

The soccer game was being played in Mies Park in Livonia that Sunday afternoon.  Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad was being ejected from the game by Bieniewicz after receiving a second violation in the game.  Saad ‘sucker punched’ him.  Saad fled the field after punching John Bieniewicz. Some of the players in the soccer game got the license plate number and a description of the vehicle he left in.

Bassel Abdul-Amir Saad originally faced a  felony charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. That charge is being amended to second-degree murder.  Bieniewicz died of blunt force trauma to the neck.  Saad is currently being held on a $1 million bond.

Funeral services for John Bieniewicz will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday July 10th, 2014 at Hosana-Tabor Lutheran Church, 9600 Leverne, Redford, Michigan.
