PRESQUE ISLE COUNTY, MI – On April 7th, 2014, three week old Ashton Robert Richardson of Hawks, MI died from injuries he suffered from the alleged abuse he endured at the hands of 18 year old Joshua Alan Tough of Onaway.
Joshua Tough has been arrested and arraigned on charges of felony murder and 1st degree child abuse. If convicted, Tough could spend the rest of his life in prison.
18 year old, Kirsten Marie Richardson, the infants mother, has been charged with second-degree child abuse. She could face up to 10 years in prison. She is being held on a $50,000 bond.
Both arrests were made on Thursday July 24th, 2014 after charges were filed against the two.
Officers were called to a home on April 3rd, 2014 in Bismarck Township shortly after 8 p.m. on a report that the three-week-old infant had stopped breathing. The infant was transported to Alpena Regional Medical Center with head and internal injuries. The child’s injuries were determined to have been caused by a non-accidental event. The baby’s mother, Kirsten Marie Richardson, and her boyfriend, Joshua Alan Tough, were the only individuals with the 3 week old boy at the time of the incident.
The infant died at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw after he was transported there from Alpena Regional Medical Center.
Joshua Alan Tough remains lodged at the Presque Isle County Jail with a preliminary exam scheduled for August 5th, 2014.
The Presque Isle County Sheriffs Department, Child and Family Services , Michigan State Police, and authorities from Saginaw County have been involved in the investigation of the baby’s death.
