HIGHLAND PARK, MI – She said she was just walking to the store when she cut through a lot and heard the noise of a baby in a dumpster. She also stated to those around her that she pulled the baby boy out of the dumpster and immediately took him home. All of this taking place around 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, August 23rd, 2014.
Word spread quickly around Highland Park. Outrage ensued from residents wondering who would do such a thing to a new born baby especially with the Safe Haven Laws in place.
The media arrived. The young girl was being hailed as a hero. She said she was “doing the right thing” by rescuing the baby. What the 16 year old was not telling was that she was the actual mother to the new born child. Her own mother became suspicious. That’s when the story started to unravel.
The young girl gave birth to the child around midnight on August 22nd, 2014.
The baby boy was rushed to Detroit Children’s Hospital this morning and found to be very healthy.
The 16 year old girl had options. She could have used the internet to find out what those were. She made the wrong choices for sure.
Michigan’s Safe Haven Law states you can leave your baby, up to 3 days old, with a staff member at any hospital, fire station, police station or any emergency service provider that is on duty in Michigan.
It is uncertain if the girl will face charges. Child Protective Services is involved and it is also uncertain if the family wants the child.
We are not naming the girl or showing her face because she is a minor.
