Road Rage in Genoa Township Leaves One Man Dead

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – Martin Zale, 69-years-old, is locked up tonight after he road rageshot and killed 43-year-old Derek Flemming during a suspected road rage incident.

There are many unanswered questions but one thing is certain, it has shaken residents in the area but it even has the officers who responded to the scene speechless.

The incident started in Howell.  Both were driving on eastbound Grand River at about 3:35 p.m. stopping at a red light when the confrontation happened.  Witnesses say that Flemming was ‘a little aggressive with Zale‘.

The Livingston County Sheriff Department said that the driver of a dark blue Dodge pickup truck passed a silver Ford Escape on eastbound Grand River.

The vehicles came to a stop at Chilson, at that point the Derek Flemming got out of his Escape and confronted Martin Zale the driver of the pickup.  It is at that point that Zale pulled out a gun and shot Flemming in the head.

Investigators do not believe Derek Flemming came into physical contact with the 69-year-old man.

It is not clear whether Zale felt he was in danger.  Police are not saying if his gun was registered or if he had a concealed weapons permit.

Martin Zale has been charged with murder.  Martin Zale was arraigned Thursday on an open murder charge and firearms charges. He is being held at the Livingston County Jail without bond. Prosecutor William Vailliencourt said Zale presented his concealed weapons permit to police.

The Livingston County Sheriff Department is asking that anyone who witnessed the alleged road rage or the shooting to call the Sheriff’s Department at 517-546-2440.
