PRESQUE ISLE COUNTY, MI – Kristen Richardson accepted a plea deal Monday admitting to third degree child abuse related to the death of her three-week-old baby boy in April of 2014.
On April 7th, 2014, three-week old Ashton Robert Richardson of Hawks, MI died from injuries he suffered from the alleged abuse he endured at the hands of 18-year-old Joshua Alan Tough of Onaway.
Joshua Tough has pleaded not guilty to murder and child abuse.
18-year-old, Kirsten Marie Richardson, the infant’s mother, had been charged with second-degree child abuse.
Richardson says she knew that Tough has a criminal history and mental health issues, and didn’t know Tough was possibly abusing the boy when left alone together.
Officers were called to a home on April 3rd, 2014 in Bismarck Township shortly after 8 p.m. on a report that the three-week-old infant had stopped breathing.
The infant was transported to Alpena Regional Medical Center with head and internal injuries. The child’s injuries were determined to have been caused by a non-accidental event.
The baby’s mother, Kirsten Marie Richardson, and her boyfriend, Joshua Alan Tough, were the only individuals with the 3 week old boy at the time of the incident.
The infant died at Covenant Hospital in Saginaw after he was transported there from Alpena Regional Medical Center.
Joshua Alan Tough remains lodged at the Presque Isle County Jail.
