REDFORD, MI – A 17 year old student was shot while walking to Thurston High School at about 7:30 this morning.
Darien McNeil is recovering at Botsford Hospital from non life threatening injuries that he sustained when he was shot while walking to his high school in Redford.
The shooting happened in the area of Kendall at Crosley. (East of Beech Daly, north of Schoolcraft)
A suspect vehicle has been described as a green, four-door Ford with no hub caps. Reports initially indicated the vehicle may also have had black rims, which was occupied by two suspects.
Police say Darien McNeil had a previous encounter with one of the passengers in the green Ford. At this time, police say it does not appear the victim was selected at random. It appears as though the parties involved in the shooting this morning know each other and have issues with each other. The victim was targeted because of this.
Three schools still under lock down. They are Thurston High School, Jane Addams Elementary and Shear Pre-School. They remain on lock down because of the proximity of the shooting. All precautions are being taken.
The district enacted their “Shelter in Place” procedures. They have locked the doors and students will not be allowed outside. However, inside the building classes are being held as usual.
It must be noted that the shooting did not happen at the school. The student was shot while on his way to the high school.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident. If you have any information, call either 911 or (313) 387-2555 immediately.
