Authorities arrested the two women September 23rd for stealing tomatoes, corn and other produce from two fruit stands on Center Road.

The two women are alleged roommates and have had numerous run-ins with the law before.

Angela Lamie, 36, and Cherie Young, 49, pleaded not guilty to two counts of larceny, both misdemeanors.

Surveillance video from one of the pilfered fruit stands led police to their suspects.  Authorities immediately recognized the two from their scrapes with the law before.

The women are alleged to have stolen from one fruit stand in the 13000 block of Center Road on Aug. 20 and Aug. 23 at 1 a.m. Another theft is reported at Edmondson Orchards stand on Aug. 19 at 2 a.m. The women stole about $150 worth of food each time.

The burning question remained with investigators.  Why did they steal the fruits and vegetables?  Grand Traverse Sheriff Lt. Chris Barsheff stated “They said the reason why they stole it is because they needed to eat it.”

Their pre-trial conference is scheduled for Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. in 86th District Court.
