MARATHON TOWNSHIP – On Saturday, October 11, 2014, at approx. 8:06pm Lapeer Co. 911 Central Dispatch received a call for an ORV crash that occurred at 6655 North Lake Rd. in Marathon Twp. of Lapeer Co.
It was advised the subject was in critical condition on the scene.
Marathon Twp. First Responders arrived on scene and attempted life saving measures on scene.
Lapeer Co. EMS arrived and assisted with these measures. Lapeer Co. Deputies also arrived on scene and assisted with the care.
Kelvin Retherford, 56-years-old, died from his injuries at McLaren-Lapeer.
It was determined Kelvin Retherford had been driving his ORV from his residence on his property and had traveled west bound in the hay field. Mr. Retherford lost control of the ORV and struck some brush and flipped the ORV over and onto himself.
There was a witness to the crash who was able to arrive on location and assist with pulling the ORV off of Retherford. Lapeer 911 dispatch was contacted for help. It is believed speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
The Lapeer County Sheriffs Department was assisted at the scene by Marathon First Responders, Lapeer County EMS, and the Michigan State Police.
This incident is being investigated by the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Department.
