MCGREGOR, MI – The Sanilac County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the murder of a 35-year-old McGregor man.
The initial call came in on October 12, 2014 at approximately 1:30 p.m. when the subject was found deceased in his residence.
Sheriff Biniecki advises that the investigation continues into the 35-year-old deceased man.
The preliminary investigation is indicating that this is an isolated incident and there does not appear to be any cause for public safety concerns.
Sheriff Garry Biniecki announced that Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 2000 block of East Forester Road in Sanilac County’s Bridgehampton Township Deckerville, Michigan) on Sunday, October 12th at approximately 1:30 p.m. in response to a male subject found deceased in his bed.
The preliminary investigation shows that a neighbor came to check on the man at his residence when he did not show up for work and found him lying in his bed with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. According to Detective Sergeant Darrin Siemen, the deceased male was identified as 35-year-old Billy Chernow Jr. of McGregor.
The Medical Examiner’s Office advised that the autopsy would be performed on Tuesday, October 14th in the morning and will provide some additional answers in the investigation of this suspicious death.
Sheriff Biniecki stated, “This loss is a tragedy and we are working rigorously to find the answers to what took place. I know the public is on edge and I am sensitive to that, however for reasons I cannot disclose to not compromise the investigation, it is pointing us to an isolated incident that does not appear to be random.
Neighbors and members of the community are reminded to be vigilant and alert to their surroundings and encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they see something suspicious, but school and regularly scheduled activities should not be disrupted.
