Grand Traverse Mall Closed due to Death Investigation

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – The Grand Traverse Mall will continue to be closed this evening as the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the suspicious death of a 64-year-old man. GT Mall

Official Statement from Grand Traverse Mall Management:

Thank you for your patience and support throughout the day. Grand Traverse Mall will open tomorrow, October 15th, 2014,  at 10am. All inquiries about the incident should be directed to the Traverse City Police Department. Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who were affected.

The deceased man has been identified as Ricky Alan Billings, 64 years old.

Billings is a Traverse City resident who was employed as a night shift housekeeper at the Grand Traverse Mall.

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab from Grayling is completing their on scene technician work. An autopsy has been scheduled for tomorrow in Grand Rapids, MI.

The cause of death is not immediately apparent. Investigators are continuing to interview everyone who may have been present during night of this occurrence.

The Sheriff’s office would like to thank the Grand Traverse Mall staff, employees, store owners and patrons for their cooperation during the time of this investigation.

The Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a suspicious death at the Grand Traverse Mall that occurred some time after the mall closed last night.

The decedent is a male between 60 and 70 years of age.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with the Medical Examiner’s Office, the MSP Crime Lab, and mall management.

The mall will be closed until further notice. Target and Macy’s will remain open but no access to the mall.

One person on the Grand Traverse Mall Facebook page stated “It was a security guard, and he was struck on the head.  The security officer was found in the food court.”  We cannot confirm that information.
