Authorities Locate Cheboygan Family in Florida

CHEBOYGAN, MI – Authorities in Cheboygan this week started a nationwide search for a family that had disappeared from the area.  That family was located in Fort Meyers, Florida.Richard Fero

Sheriff Dale Clarmont from the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Department stated that Shavon Fero, 31-years-old, came to the office saying that she thought her children were being abused by her 29-year-old husband Richard Daniel Fero.

Shavon said she wanted to move to a safe house.  An arrest warrant was issued for Richard on charges of felonious assault and child abuse.

When Shavon and the children failed to show at a safe house, the police put out a BOLO – be on the look out for the family.  The children were listed as being endangered.  According to the sheriff’s office, Shavon had contact with her husband Richard at which time she and her husband then fled the state. Officials believe they may have fled the state to avoid court action regarding the children.

Richard Fero was arrested at a relative’s home in Fort Meyers, Florida around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday. Shavon and their five children were found with Richard.

Once the family was located in Florida, the children were taken into protective custody.  Arrangements are being made to transport them back to Cheboygan.

Richard Fero will be arraigned in Florida and will be extradited back to Michigan on the charges issued by the Cheboygan County Prosecutor.
