DECKERVILLE, MI – Sheriff’s Investigators confirmed that the suspect in connection with the homicide of 35-year-old Billy Chernow Jr. of McGregor who was found dead in his home from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head has been identified as David Lamont, 40-years-old of Deckerville.
The initial cause of death ruled at the scene was suicide by gun, with an autopsy scheduled for Monday, October 20th, according to Sanilac County Medical Examiner Dr. William Starbird.
It is believed that the motive behind the tragic series of events that put residents of the small community on edge was a fit of jealous rage over a woman that Chernow and Lamont had in common.
The investigation began when Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the 2000 block of East Forester Road in Sanilac County’s Bridgehampton Township on Sunday, October 12th at approximately 1:30 p.m. in response to a male subject found dead in his bed by his neighbor.
Sanilac County Investigators knew immediately that the murder was personal in nature when they found Billy Chernow Jr. shot in the head.
Sheriff’s Investigators found Lamont dead in his home in the 6000 block of Shabbona Road in Forester Township from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head with the weapon still present on Friday, October 17th, 2014 when they executed a search warrant.
David Lamont had volunteered many theories on how the homicide happened, but when asked to meet with investigators on several occasions to give his formal statement he avoided them and became intentionally unavailable.
Before and after Lamont was named as the deceased suspect, rumors swirled in the community and online. Many calling whomever murdered Billy Chernow a coward for not standing up to the crime that he allegedly committed.
When emotions run high, even more damage can be done to the innocent who are left standing in the wake of such personal destruction. Kindness and empathy should be what is given.
No one knows what torment lead Lamont up to the murder of Chernow. What is interesting is that the search warrant was executed by Sanilac County Sheriff’s Deputies, Sanilac County Drug Task Force Investigators with assistance from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team.
The investigation will continue pending crime lab analysis and ballistic reports and the public is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at 810-648-8360 with any information they feel may pertain to the case.
