GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI – On January 6th, 2013, Grand Traverse Sheriff Deputies and Detectives began a lengthy investigation into a criminal sexual conduct case involving a child who was sexually assaulted at a local Grand Traverse County church by 29-year-old Steven William Richard of Honor, Michigan.
Several motions were filed by defense counsel in the Grand Traverse County 13th Circuit Court.
As the case progressed through the court system. One of the defense motions, which was denied in the case was appealed to the Michigan Court of Appeals.
During the summer 2014, the Michigan Court of Appeals upheld the decision made by the 13th Circuit Ct. judge. This allowed a statement, which was made by Richard to his pastor to be used in the prosecution.
At the time Richard was arrested in January of 2013, he was on federal probation from a prior sexual assault conviction that was related to a sexual assault Richard committed on a child under 13 years of age.
Today the lead detective in the case and the chief assistant prosecutor were in court to hear Richard enter a first degree criminal sexual conduct plea in the case.
The plea was conducted via video as Richard is currently incarcerated in a federal prison in the state of Arizona. Richard’s sentencing is scheduled for the month of November 2014.
