MANISTEE, MI – Little River Band of Ottawa Indian Police Authority has had their policing authority suspended by the Manistee County Sheriff.
In a statement the tribal police will have no authority to police non-Indian persons in Manistee County.
The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office has made this change based on recent incidents and investigations.
Manistee County Sheriff Dale Kowalkowski felt he did not have trust in the tribal police agency after receiving a call from tribal leader Larry Romanelli on Friday. Romanelli notified the sheriff that he was suspending “upper management” staff at the tribal police agency.
This suspension became effective Tuesday, November 4th, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. until further notice.
The tribal police will still have authority that’s granted to any federal agency.
