REDFORD, MI – On Sunday, November 9th, 2014 at 4:00am two suspects attempted to steal the catalytic converter off of a car parked at an apartment complex on Joy Road east of Inkster.
They were described as two adult black males. Their vehicle was described as: A black Dodge Charger, currently with one headlight not functioning.
The crime was interrupted by the owner of the parked car. The suspects left the scene, then returned apparently to recover a jack that they accidentally left behind. Upon their return they fired pistol shots at the owner of the car. No one was hit.
They have had other reports in 2014 of suspects in a black Dodge Charger stealing catalytic converters in Redford, with no shots fired.
This crime is very similar in suspect description and behavior to a crime that occurred on the east side of Detroit in mid August. During that event catalytic converter thieves in a black Charger fired shots at a homeowner who attempted to defend his property.
There is clearly a group of armed catalytic converter thieves active in the Detroit metropolitan area who are willing to shoot at victims to complete their crimes. If you see a catalytic converter theft in progress, avoid confronting the suspects and call 911 from a position of cover.
