FLINT, MI – According to MDOT there was a traffic accident on southbound I-75 at the Pierson Road Exit 122. Traffic was being routed onto I-475.
Police said the accident took place around 8 p.m. when the driver of one of the five vehicles said they were cut off by another vehicle that led to the chain reaction accident.
A responders statement: “Being advised in Mt. Morris Township I-75 southbound is shut down from I-475 to Pierson Rd. Horrible accident involving multiple cars.“
5 vehicles were involved in the accident. The jaws of life were used to extricate an individual.
A 54-year-old woman, Shelly Lazarus, from Bloomfield Hills has died from her injuries. Her husband, Eric Lazarus, is in critical condition. The couple was traveling in a Ford Focus.
Shelley was the Eastover Elementary Media Specialist and worked for Bloomfield Hills Schools since 1988. Her husband, Eric Lazarus, is the Caretaker for the Bloomfield Hills Schools E.L. Johnson Nature Center
The crash shutdown the left two lanes of southbound I-75 to traffic.
The car that Shelley and Eric Lazarus were in slowed for traffic, but the car behind them didn’t stop, and read-ended them.
The driver of the car that hit them is in jail. He reportedly was driving with a suspended license, and police believe alcohol was a factor in the crash. Police took the 25-year-old Montrose man into custody after the crash. He is lodged in the Genesee County Jail.
Another accident took place near Birch Run on December 1st, 2014 that involved 8 cars.
At 6:47am, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), there was a crash involving 8 vehicles near mile marker 137 north of Birch Run.
