EMMET COUNTY, MI – Emmet County Sheriff Pete Wallin is warning citizens of a growing real estate scam in their area.
Sheriff Wallin states, “The suspect will attempt to sell or rent the victim a home using information obtained from Craigslist.”
They ask for the victim to send either first month’s rent or a down payment through an electronic service such as Western Union.
Sheriff Wallin states, “If you are inquiring about a rental or home for sale, please check with the company or home owner directly for details.” There are various ways to check the legitimacy of a listing by searching your county equalization website. As the old saying goes and still holds true today, “If it is too good to be true, then it probably is.”
If you would like to report this or any other scam, you are encouraged to contact the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office at (231) 439-8900.
