Multi Car accident on US-127 near Mt. Pleasant

ISABELLA COUNTY, MI – An accident involving three vehicles occurred between Rosebush and Mt. Pleasant just after Baseline Road around 10:30PM on December 5th, 2014.Fatal Crash

The US-127 southbound lane between Mt. Pleasant and Rosebush was shut down due to the large accident.

Police had been told to be on the lookout for a wrong-way driver in the area minutes before the crash was reported.

Deputies were called to the scene around 10:30p.m. Friday after emergency dispatchers received multiple calls of a highway accident involving several fatalities.

Ryan Michael Tree was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup north in the southbound lanes on the highway when the head-on accident occurred.   Authorities state that Tree had been drinking just prior to the crash.

Two people were reportedly killed.  Scott Michael Kuhnert, 45-years-old, of Bath and Ryan Michael Tree, 41-years-old, of Shepherd were pronounced dead at the scene.

One person, Ellen Monahan Andary, 57-years-old, of Bath, was air lifted to Sparrow hospital.  She is listed in critical condition.  She was a passenger in the Kuhnert vehicle, a 2014 Volkswagen Passat.

Ryan Tree first struck the Volkswagen Passat head-on driven by Scott Kuhnert.  The Volkswagen then hit a 2010 Ford Focus driven by Joshua Watters.

Authorities believe the velocity of the impact to be between 150-170 miles per hour in the crash of the pickup truck and the Volkswagen.  The speedometer in one of the vehicles was stuck at 77 miles per hour after the accident.

Joshua Mark Watters, 21-years-old and Thomas William Arends, 15-years-old, both of Mt. Pleasant, were taken to McLaren Central Michigan for treatment of minor injuries.

Everyone except Tree were wearing seat belts.

MDOT reports that SB US-127 traffic was rerouted via Exit 149 Rosebush, to Old US-27 (Old Mission Rd), south to US-127 BR, back to US-127.  US-127 was reopened around 1am.

Michigan State police, Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police, Shepherd Police and the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department assisted at the scene.
