ONAWAY, MI – Shepler’s Mackinac Island Ferry service announced on December 5th, 2014 that they are having a new 85 foot aluminum ferry built.
In the spring of 1945, Captain William H. Shepler returned to Mackinaw (his birth place) and realized the potential of the area, specifically transporting people to and from the Island. His dream, however, was to provide a fast, efficient, and modern type of service that he felt was half of the Mackinac experience. That tradition will live on with this new ferry that is being built by Moran Iron Works of Onaway.
The first shipments of aluminum have already been delivered to Moran Iron Works for fabrication of the new ship.
The new ferry will be named “Miss Margy”. One of their original boats was named Miss Margy after Margaret Shepler, co-founder of the business. Once completed, they will have the Capt. Shepler and Miss Margy to honor both of the founders of Shepler’s.
The new boat will be just slightly faster than the rest that they already have in operation. It will be able to carry 281 passengers.
