Gov. Rick Snyder appoints Mike Zimmer as LARA director


LANSING, MI – Gov. Rick Snyder announced on December 18th, 2014 the appointment of Mike Zimmer as director of the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.Mike Zimmer

Zimmer had been serving as acting director since August when then-director Steve Arwood became chief operating officer at the Michigan Economic Development Corp.




“Mike Zimmer has an extraordinary knowledge of Michigan’s regulatory systems and a long track record of cutting bureaucratic red tape,” Snyder said. “Under his leadership at LARA, we will continue to protect our citizens, improve services for our business customers and make state government more efficient.”

 As the state’s chief regulatory officer, Zimmer has supervision over many of the regulatory and licensing functions in state government.

His responsibilities include oversight of the bureaus of Construction Codes, Employment Relations, Fire Services, Health Care Services and Services for Blind Persons; Corporations, Securities, and Commercial Licensing Bureau; Liquor Control Commission; Michigan Administrative Hearing System; Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration; Office of Regulatory Reinvention; Public Service Commission and Workers’ Compensation Agency.

Zimmer had also served as chief deputy director of LARA.

He previously served as deputy director of the State Office of Administrative Hearings and Rules. He also served as director of the Bureau of Hearings in the former Department of Consumer and Industry Services; as the Director of the Office of Regulatory Reform under former Gov. John Engler; and worked for the Senate Majority Floor Leader.

Zimmer earned a bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University and his law degree from George Washington University.
