TWIN LAKE, MI – Northbound and Southbound M-120 (Holton Road) at 5th Street has reopened as of 7:30pm per Muskegon County Central Dispatch after one person was killed and another injured in a two-car crash on an icy road in Twin Lake on December 20th, 2014.
A light rain that had fallen quickly froze when the temperatures dropped and that made the roadways very slick in the area.
The accident occurred late Saturday afternoon at about 4:50pm.
Chad Calkins, 44-years-old, of Muskegon, was the driver of an older model Ford Crown Victoria that was headed northbound and another driver of a Volvo station wagon, Jon Vanpaemel, 72-years-old, of Twin Lake, that was traveling southbound on Holton Road collided due to the icy road conditions.
Calkins lost control due to the icy pavement causing the crash. Both of those vehicles then caught fire.
Chad Calkins was killed in the accident and fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, Jon Vanpaemel, did survive and was transported to the hospital. He is now listed in stable condition but remains hospitalized.
A Muskegon County Sheriff’s Deputy who was responding to another accident in the area heard the crash happen and saw the cars go up in flames, but couldn’t get Calkins who was killed out of the car in time.
MDOT is cautioning that roadways are icy around the state and that drivers need to slow down. Other drivers who were in the area at the time of or not long after the accident report that there was black ice in many spots.
