TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Traverse City Area Public Schools officials and detectives from Grand Traverse County believe a former administrative assistant may have stolen more than $50,000 from the district.
Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Detectives obtained a warrant last week for 50-year-old Mary Leona Gillison of Arcadia, MI. The warrant was for Embezzlement from the Traverse City Area Public Schools.
Several months ago, TCAPS began a forensic audit and worked with Sheriff’s Detectives on what was reported to be embezzlement of more than $50,000.00. Gillison was arrested on this warrant on December 18th, 2014.
Traverse City Area Public Schools asked the district’s auditing firm to review purchase card use and cash handling procedures at West Middle School after the school’s administrative assistant Mary Gillison suddenly resigned on March 10th, 2014.
It is believed Gillison misused a district purchasing card, a credit card that is authorized to an employee to make purchases through a department account.
Officials believe Gillison bought a “personal item” in December of 2013 with a district purchasing card. They began investigating after more questionable purchases were discovered.
Traverse City Area Public Schools are insured for any money lost as the result of employee theft. It is expected that they will be reimbursed based on the investigation.
