KALAMAZOO, MI – On Sunday, January 4th, 2015 at approximately 2:57a.m., Kalamazoo Public Safety officers responded to the area of Ada St. and Burrell Ave. on a report of multiple gun shots fired.
Upon arrival, officers observed a dark colored Chevrolet Tahoe occupied by three subjects fleeing the area at a high rate of speed. Public Safety officers attempted to stop the vehicle in 200 block of S. Westnedge however driver of the vehicle refused to stop.
Public Safety officers pursued the vehicle for approximately three minutes which ended in the 600 block of Mable Street when the suspect vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle. The parked vehicle was occupied by a female who sustained minor injuries. The occupant was transported to Bronson Hospital for treatment.
Officers found that the Tahoe had two bullet holes on the driver’s side of the vehicle. The driver of the Tahoe told officers that he was being shot at.
Officers searched the path that the suspect vehicle traveled and they located a loaded .40 Cal Glock handgun on N. Westnedge near Harding Place which appeared to have been discarded by the suspects in the Tahoe.
The driver, who is a 26 year old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested and lodged at the Kalamazoo County jail on the charges of fleeing and eluding, operating while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license and an outstanding federal probation warrant out of the US Marshals office.
The second occupant, who is a 23 year old Kalamazoo resident, was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of the Kalamazoo Township and also a probation violation charge.
The third occupant of the vehicle was released. Officers returned to the area of the shooting and found several spent .40 caliber bullet casings.
A Witness on scene reported that suspects in a dark colored Mercury Grand Marquise fired the gunshots at the subjects in the Tahoe. The suspects in the Grand Marquise are still at large. It is unknown what events lead up to the shooting.
