HAWKS, MI – The family of a 10-year-old boy from Hawks, which is located northwest of Alpena, are mourning the loss of their son after an auto accident that occurred on Friday, January 9th, 2015.
It was just shortly before 5:00pm when the two vehicles collided with each other on County Road 638 just west of Lost Lake Road. The vehicle that was traveling west-bound, driven by Susan Herndon, 56-years-old, lost control, crossing the center-line, crashing into an east-bound vehicle.
Along with Herndon were her passengers Joseph West, 47-years-old and Zaccary West, 10-years-old.
Life saving efforts were performed at the accident scene on Zaccary West. When authorities arrived they found him to be unresponsive and not breathing. CPR was administered at the crash site. He was transported to Alpena Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
Susan Herndon and Joseph West were also taken to Alpena Regional Medical Center for their injuries. Herndon was later transferred to a Saginaw hospital. West was treated and released.
The east bound vehicle was driven by Anthony Trapp, 72-years-old. His passengers are identified as Wilma Trapp, 65-years-old, Emily Campa, 75-years-old, and Ronald Campa, 76-years-old. They were all treated at the scene and released.
The crash remains under investigation by the Presque Isle County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities believe that weather conditions, including slippery roads and poor visibility were contributing factors in the unfortunate accident.
