PORT HURON TOWNSHIP, MI – One person is dead following an early morning fire in a motel in Port Huron Township.
According to St. Clair County Sheriff Tim Donnellon, Central Dispatch received a call of smoke coming from a room at the Flamingo Motel, located at 3845 Lapeer Road, shortly after 4:00 this morning. Port Huron Township Fire and Rescue responded, along with deputies from the Sheriff’s Office.
The fire was reported out shortly before 5:00 and was contained mostly to one room at the motel, which was being rented by 60 year old Sharon Macey. Members of the Port Huron Township Fire Department got Ms. Macey out of the room while fighting the fire, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. A dog and cat also perished in the fire.
According to Port Huron Township Fire Chief Craig Miller, there was minor damage caused to an adjacent room as firefighters checked for fire spread.
Because of the blaze, there is no heat or electricity at this time at the motel. The owner of the Flamingo is making arrangements for temporary shelter for the other residents of the nine room motel.
Members of the St. Clair County Fire Investigation Team are at the scene of the blaze at this hour.
No cause or manner of death has been determined at this time. The fire remains under investigation. No cause for the fire has been determined.
Tri-Hospital EMS assisted at the scene of the fire.
