LYON TOWNSHIP, MI – A father and his young son were killed around 8:00am on Tuesday, January 20th, 2015 on Pontiac Trail, between Martindale and Silver Lake Roads.
The 36-year-old father, Pedro Montanez, of New Hudson, was taking his children to Kent Lake Elementary and was going westbound on Pontiac Trail near Silver Lake Road when the crash happened.
Montanez lost control of his 2005 Mazda 3 on the snow covered roadway. His vehicle then crossed into the path of a 1994 Ford Super Duty truck.
Pedro Montanez was pronounced dead at the scene. The three children were transported to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor in critical condition. A 9-year-old son, Steven Montanez, died later at the hospital after being extricated from the wreck.
The other two children were initially listed in critical condition. Currently a 6-year-old daughter is in stable condition and a 10-year-old son is in critical condition.
The 25-year-old driver of the pickup truck that Montanez hit was not hurt.
It is believed that icy road conditions contributed to the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
