Barry County man dies in early morning Kent County crash (Updated)

CALEDONIA TOWNSHIP, MI – An early morning crash claimed the life of a Barry County man on January 26th, crash

The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. Monday in Alto on Whitneyville Avenue SE at 92nd Street SE.

A 59-year-old man, Thomas Robert Martino, from Hastings failed to stop at a stop sign while heading west on 92nd Street.  He was hit by a Chevy Trail Blazer, driven by Ronald John Smith, from Middleville, traveling north on Whitneyville Avenue.  His Chevy Impala went airborne before landing in a nearby driveway.

Authorities said he was in cardiac arrest when they arrived at the scene, but it’s unclear whether he had a medical issue before the the crash occurred.  The driver of Impala, Thomas Martino died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the Blazer, Ronald Smith, a 48-year-old man from Middleville, was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
