KALAMAZOO, MI – On Friday, February 13, 2015 at approximately 2:15 am, Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety received a 911 call indicating that an ambulance was needed for a female victim who had been burned at a residence located in the 900 block of Douglas.
Dispatchers worked to obtain additional information from the caller which indicated that the female had been intentionally set on fire by a male suspect.
The suspect had fled on foot and the suspect description was broadcast to all officers responding to the scene. The suspect was located in the 700 block of Mabel Street where he was arrested.
The investigation determined that the suspect and victim resided together and that they had been involved in an argument and physical altercation throughout the evening. During the altercation, the suspect doused the victim in rubbing alcohol and then set her on fire.
The 44-year-old victim was able to extinguish the fire herself by removing her shirt but not before suffering burns to her upper torso, face and singed hair. She was taken to a local hospital by LIFE ambulance where she is listed in stable condition.
The suspect, a 52-year-old male, was arrested for Assault with Intent to Murder and lodged at KCSD.
