All westbound lanes of I-96 at the Davison Freeway on Detroit’s west side were closed Saturday evening due to the crash.
MDOT said that police were forcing drivers off of that stretch of the freeway to detour them around the accident.
The car slid on ice and into a freeway column on I-96. Two teenage boys died from the accident.
Both of the teenage boys that were killed have been identified. This first is Darius Berrien, 17-years-old, from Detroit. He was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Darius was scheduled to graduate from high school in 3 months. He had just paid for his cap & gown on Friday, February 13th, 2015.
The second person is Haason Abdul-Kareem, 19-years-old, from Detroit. He would have turned 20-years-old next month. He leaves behind 2 daughters: 2 years old and 11 months. He was also ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
A woman, who was also in the vehicle, in her early twenties, was taken to the hospital. Her condition is unknown at this time.
Weather related roads obviously contributed to the accident.
Information for Darius Berrien’s funeral can be found here.
MI Headlines would like to express sincere condolences to both families.
