ALPENA, MI – The Alpena Polar Plunge 2015 took place on Saturday, February 28th, 2015, at the Sand Bar & Grill on Long Lake.
Hundreds of people turned out to support the Special Olympics cause and to watch those who tested their will at jumping into the frigid waters of Long Lake.
Those who were brave enough to take the plunge had raised $14, 499. That figure did not include any of the other events that took place throughout the day.
With a beautiful, sunny, winter day and temperatures hovering near 20 degrees, some 40 entrants took their place on the ice to raise needed funds for those with disabilities.
Community Service Trooper Ashley Simpson of the Michigan State Police Post in Alpena hoped to make this years event the biggest and best Polar Plunge in northeast Michigan.
Last year, Polar Plunge events around the state raised more than a million dollars for Special Olympics Michigan athletes.
