Tree removal begins next week at the I-96/US-23 interchange

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MI – Starting next week, construction is expected to begin at the I-96/US-23 interchange in Brighton Township. MDOT

New through-lanes will be constructed on I-96 between the current eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway and new bridges will be constructed over northbound and southbound US-23 and over Old US-23. To accommodate this work, 23 acres of trees will be cleared at the interchange to make room for the additional lanes.

Starting Monday, March 2, through Monday, March 23, there will be intermittent daytime single-lane closures on southbound US-23 at I-96, and on westbound I-96 at Spencer Road. Lane closures on southbound US-23 will occur between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Lane closures on westbound I-96 will occur between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday.

In addition, there also will be shoulder closures in each direction on I-96 and US-23 at the interchange. The lane and shoulder closures are needed for hauling material and removing trees from the construction site.
